INSPECTORS are ready to
swoop on holiday home and
caravan owners which don't
have TV licences in a
summer crackdown. An
Post, which is contracted
to sell the licences on
behalf the Department of
Communications, Energy and
Natural Resources,
initiated 15,000
prosecutions last year in
cases where people failed
to pay their TV licence.
As TV licence
inspectors prepare to
launch their summer blitz
on caravan and mobile home
parks across the country,
An Post has warned that
staff have heard all the
excuses before and that
none of them work.
"If a person
has a TV at home and
another in their holiday
or mobile home, by law a
licence is required for
each address if a
television is being
watched there. This was
not the case for many
years but has been for
some time," the
company said.
"An Post's
80-strong TV licence team
will be very active in
holiday resorts over the
summer months."
An Post points out
that a wide variety of
purchase and renewal
methods have been
developed for
householders. These
include a new online
service (www.tvlicence.ie)
which was launched last
month. The site can be
viewed in any one of 13
languages, including
Chinese, Polish,
Portuguese and Spanish.
Over one million
licences were purchased by
householders and
businesses in 2007. The
15,000 defaulters against
whom prosecutions were
initiated last year
account for about 1.5pc of
that total.
"Prosecution is
the very last resort. We
just want people to pay
their dues," the
company said.
Fines can be up to
€634.87 for a first
offence and €1,267.74
for subsequent offences
