We've just booked ourselves a seasonal pitch for the summer. We stayed at this site for the August weekend last year and loved it even though the weather was terrible.
The cost will be much the same as we would pay normally for a couple of weeks and 5 or six weekends but we will be able to come and go as we please this year and be able to get as much time as possible in the caravan.
Has anyone else tried this and if so, what did you think were the positives and negatives ? |

`Sounds like a good idea if you are going to spend 5 weekends on site.
Last year we stayed 5 weekends in a row in St,Margarets in Rosslare and would have left the Caravan there if we had owned one at the time.
What site are you going to stay on ?

We're going to Skibereen. It's an absolutely cracking site within walking distance of the town and the people who run it are very nice. The site itself is spotless and has a good playground for the kids.
The plan is to get a few weekends touring in May / June and put the caravan on site for June / July and go down every weekend and at least two full weeks. |

After two weekends of the summer I thought I'd give an update on how this has worked out.
The first weekend we drove down and got ourselves set up for the summer. Took a little more care selecting our pitch and getting the caravan in the perfect location. Other than that it was a fairly normal weekend away. Packing up to go home was much easier but we did forget a few things that we needed at home.
The big difference was the second weekend. We went down directly after work on Thursday and stayed until Sunday. There is no way we would have been able to leave this late towing the caravan so we had almost a full day extra in the weekend. Getting ready to leave was easier and the drive was quicker and less stressful. We were more careful coming home this time and made sure we didn't forget anything. Fuel consumption is much lower driving solo but this will be canceled out by being away more often.
We clean the caravan completely before leaving and take down the awning, pack everything away etc. We could leave it up, which is what a lot of people do but I would worry all week.
The disadvantages are that you are on the same site every weekend and miss out on the variety of touring around different sites. You need to be certain that you like the site and will not get bored with it halfway through the summer. It is also quite expensive and to make it cost effective we will have to use it every weekend. On the other hand it is a great incentive to be away every weekend regardless of the weather.
Overall, I am very happy with our decision to go seasonal. We may not do it next year as we are thinking about going abroad for our main holiday. I also like to get to different parts of the country so maybe next year we will look for a different site to stay at the following summer. If you want to maximise your use of your caravan I would definitely recommend going seasonal.
